How do I know if I have varicose veins?

Believe it or not, varicose veins are more common than you think and are found almost equally in both men and women. The risk with varicose veins is, that usually they are symptoms of a much larger disease, better known as venous insufficiency, and need to be treated with urgency.

Varicose veins are easier to identify because they are visible to the naked eye, usually in the form of stretched and swollen veins, and blue, black and green areas of discoloration. Many experience a dull pain in the legs through tiredness, and a heavy, weighted pain in their lower legs, generally at the end of the day or after standing for long hours.

Swelling in the ankle area is also another sign that you may have venous insufficiency, and this is caused by the liquid which pools from the blood dripping from the sides of the veins into the tissues nearby.

Lastly, the skin around your veins may also become itchy. You will notice the area around your ankle becoming discolored and changing to a dark gray. Moreover, your veins may be aggravated by quick movements or by standing up.

Is is important to take quick action to prevent serious complications related with more severe types of varicose veins. If left untreated, these veins can also be the reason for blood clots, skin ulcers and inflammation.
