VEIN DISEASE IN MEN
Spider veins and varicose veins are often thought of as a woman’s issue. However, this is a major misconception because vein disease affects millions of men across the United States.Approximately 40% of men suffer from some form of leg vein problems with around 15% of the male population experiencing complications from varicose veins.Studies have shown that although women are more likely to develop vein disease, men are more likely to develop serious complications such as blood clots and chronic venous ulcers.
Varicose veins can be unsightly and seen as a cosmetic issue, which is why many women seek treatmentearlier as compared to men who and men are less likely to seek treatment. However, men often overlook the appearance of the bulging veins and downplay the symptoms and put off seeking treatment until the disease has advanced with complications. It is important for men to understand that varicose veins are not strictly a woman’s issue nor just a cosmetic issue, but a symptom of a serious underlying condition also known as venous insufficiency which should not be ignored.

Causes of venous insufficiency in men
Venous problems, such as varicose veins, develop when the pressure inside the vein is greater than the wall-strength of the vein. This increased pressure is caused by an underlying condition known as venous reflux also referred to as venous insufficiency. In venous reflux, the valves become dysfunctional resulting in blood pooling in the vessel. The pooled blood resulting from the build-up back pressure in the vein, causes the vein to enlarge and twist leading to varicose veins formation
