Frequently Asked Questions About Endovenous Laser Vein Removal

Varicose veins is one of the most common medical problems in New York City, and people choose to deal with them in different ways.  For some people varicose or spider veins are simply a cosmetic problem.  They don’t cause them any pain or discomfort, but they also consider them unsightly and will wear clothing to cover them up.  Others find the veins very uncomfortable or even painful, and they’re usually the kind of people that get treatment for their problem.

Because varicose veins may be seen as purely a cosmetic problem for some people, they’re reluctant to get treatment.  It’s unfortunate because now it’s easier than ever to treat varicose or spider veins, especially if you’re in NYC.  Thanks to developments in laser technology in the medical field, you can get rid of painful or unsightly veins in about an hour.  Endovenous laser treatment in NYC is a minimally invasive alternative to the other surgical removal of troublesome veins.  Lasers are used to seal veins shut from the inside with a wire that delivers microscopic thermal trauma.  Ultrasound guidance ensures that the wire will only affect the damaged vein, and is an extremely effective way to treat and close veins with minimal risks.  Because the procedure is so new some people have a lot of questions about it, and we’re here to answer many of the common questions our patients have about endovenous laser removal.

Is the loss the vein a problem?

This is by far the most common question we get about the procedure.  Veins are important, but your body has plenty of them that can compensate for the newly missing ones.  Blood in the faulty/closed veins will be diverted to other unaffected veins, and blood will be able to properly circulate through the body.

What kinds of complications are possible?

Medical procedures of all kinds will always carry some kind of risk, but luckily for endovenous laser treatment recipients, the risks associated with it are very benign.  Some patients report issues with numbness or even a gentle tingling sensation, and others may experience light bruising or leg cramping.

Will the laser damage my skin?

The lasers are powerful, but they don’t pose any threat to your skin.    Some people will experience bruising or slight discoloration, but this is temporary and will fade over time.

What will I have to do after surgery?

Unlike surgical vein procedures, endovenous laser treatments don’t require a lot of recovery time.  It’s recommended that recipients avoid aerobic exercise or long periods of sitting or standing for two days after the procedure.  It’s recommended that you wear compression hose for about two weeks, and it may take a few weeks for skin to appear normal if you’ve experienced any bruising or discoloration.
