Swelling (Edema)

Swelling, which is also called “edema”, is a fairly common symptom of numerous medical conditions, some of which are heart failure or renal failure, for example. It is, therefore, often times confused with other diseases. The important difference between edema of venous insufficiency is the fact that the swelling is limited only to the legs and feet, since the cause of it is in our lower extremities. In other words, the mechanism of it is local and not central. In many other conditions, such as the mentioned above ones, the mechanism of swelling is central, or affecting the entire body. In other diseases, the edema not just decreases during the night, but moves to other, so-called “dependent” places of our body, while with venous insufficiency, the edema decreases by the morning, but does not relocate somewhere else. Based on the above, the often mistakenly prescribed diuretics (water pills) are not only not indicated, but are contraindicated for treatment of edema of venous insufficiency, since it represents not an excessive amount of water in the body, like in cardiac failure, but rather abnormal distribution of normal amount of water due to leaking valves in superficial veins. Coincidentally, venous edema is often being confused with lymphedema, extremely rare and very different type of swelling. Lymphedema is retention of lymphatic fluid in the soft tissue. It can occur as a result of a tropical parasitic condition called “filariasis” which is non-existent in the United States. It can also be congenital, being already obvious at the very early age. Finally, it can be a side effect of certain surgeries.
